Cranberry Estates Safety Update
VIEW SAFETY COMMITTEE SURVEY
May 2006
Dear Cranberry Estates Residents,
The Cranberry Estates Home Owners Association board of directors has been working with the residents on Forge and Brandywine Roads to help address a concern regarding the speed and volume of traffic on these roads.
HOA Board member Bill McGill has been working with a resident of Forge Road, Sam Kolunie, to address the traffic and speeding issue. We have been attending the township meetings and making our township supervisors aware of our concerns, and we asked that speed humps to be installed on these two roads. Recently, the township placed counters on Forge Road to determine if our concerns are founded. In order for speed humps to be considered for installation, three requirements must be met. First, the residents must support the request for speed humps. We met this requirement because Sam Kolunie went door to door asking residents of Forge and Brandywine to sign the request for speed humps. The second requirement is excess volume of traffic. Once again the counter survey determined that Forge Road does receive a higher than normal number of cars per day. The third requirement, speed in excess of 10 mph over the posted speed limit, was not met. The posted speed limit is 25 mph, and the counter survey determined the average speed on Forge Road was 32 mph. The average speed would have had to be a minimum of 35 mph in order to meet this requirement. So, in short, we met two out of the three requirements for the speed hump installation.
The township board of supervisors did not take action to install speed humps on Forge or Brandywine Roads because the survey did not yield the results necessary to install the speed humps to slow down the traffic.
So, since we are unable to get the township to install speed humps to help reduce the volume of traffic and slow down the vehicles, we come to you to appeal to your good will and common sense. We all live in the same neighborhood and what affects one area of our Cranberry Community, also affects every resident.
The residents of Forge and Brandywine Roads and the members for the Cranberry Estates HOA would like to ask the residents of Cranberry to please put yourself in their shoes for a moment. Think about the safety concerns these residents have for their playing children. Therefore, we ask you, PLEASE DO NOT use Forge or Brandywine Roads as a short cut to Kagey Road or to get to the school campus. These two roads were not meant to handle the amount of traffic they receive on a daily basis.
Again, from neighbor to neighbor, you are being asked to NOT use Forge and Brandywine Roads as a short cut!
It has also come to the Board's attention that the residents on Lincoln Road are also noticing the high speed traveling on this road. So, please obey the posted speed limit signs on this street and all of the streets in our development. We have many children, but none to spare.
Other News From the Township
The HOA Board of Directors has been working with the township to improve the pedestrian safety in our neighborhood, and we are making small steps toward improvement. First, we asked the township for help in installing a sidewalk on the one side of the bridge on Cranberry Blvd. Currently, there are only sidewalks on one side of the bridge, forcing pedestrians to cross Cranberry Blvd to cross over the bridge. The township has agreed to install the missing stretch of sidewalk. This will improve pedestrian safety greatly.
In addition, the township has agreed to place pedestrian crosswalks at Queen and Westover Roads. This will allow the foot traffic to safely cross Cranberry Blvd. and will get school children from the King and Queen Road side of the development to the proper side of Cranberry Blvd. to safely walk to school. The HOA had also requested crosswalks near Forge Road so the Stewart, Longwood, and Countryside school children can safely cross Cranberry Blvd to get to school. However, the township has determined that a crosswalk at Forge or Brandywine Roads would not be safe. (Yet, our children must still cross in this area to get to school) So, the HOA will continue to work with the township to find a safe location for the children from these three roads to cross Cranberry Blvd.
Other New From the HOA
In an effort to improve pedestrian safety in our community, the HOA is seeking bids to install sidewalk on the Western side of Cranberry Blvd. between Westover and Brighton Roads. This improvement will help reduce the number of times a pedestrian must cross Cranberry Blvd to safely navigate our neighborhood.
Conclusion
Once the township installs the crosswalk and sidewalks on the bridge on Cranberry Blvd, walkers will have a safer path. This is especially true for our children who must walk to school. In addition, the HOA is looking in install sidewalk on the western side of Cranberry Blvd between Westover and Brighton Roads. We are trying to make our neighborhood safer for our most precious gifts, our children. We appreciate your support.
